Nomadic Frontiers' main work is to seek out needs in the nomadic community and then meet those needs in a very practical  way. While focusing on education and medical needs, we are not limited to those.

This page is currently undergoing and update to reflect some of our past successes and our future plans. Please visit back soon. Meanwhile, here are a couple of example of things we've done recently.

Major Medical Assistance

Eye Clinic in Erdene Soum

We recently sponsored an eye clinic in Erdene Soum, the district where Nomadic Frontiers' rural base is located. Partnering with an eye clinic i Ulaanbaatar, resident Welsh opthamoloigist Richard Young, conducted eye examinations for about twenty nomadic families, prescribing eye-glasses for many of them. The eye glasses were provided at reduced prices (about $2.50 USD) to all who were in need.

Some of the older people had not been able to read or see well enough to do detailed work (such as sewing) for quite some time. It was thrilling to see the look on the faces of some of the older folks as they realized that they'd once again be able to read, sew or do other detailed work on their own.

Re-ruralization

Every year many herding families in Mongolia make the decision to move from the country to the city, usually Mongolia's capital Ulaanbaatar. The reasons for moving are many. Educational opportunities bring some in. Medical needs compel others to move. Some, lacking experience and proper training, find herding unprofitable. Others are forced out by natural disasters beyond their own control.

This year we came into contact with a family from Bayan Hongor, a southern province on the edge of the Gobi Desert. The family had been forced to move to Ulaanbaatar in 2000. That year there was an unexpected severe cold spell that killed thousands of animals. Many families in the region simply woke up one morning to find whole herds frozen to death. This was one of  those families.

Having nothing left, they moved to Ulaanbaatar in the hopes of finding gainful employment. For about five years they scraped by, earning money washing cars and collecting trash cans and bottles for recycling. They wanted to move back to the country-side and to the herding life, but were unable.

Having learned about this family from a partner organization in Ulaanbaatar, we were able to find gainful work for them in the countryside where they are now herding for hire and working, with our assistance, on re-stocking their own herd.
